Booklaunch ‘The Paleev Collection’

On Saturday 20 April 2019, the K-Gallery in St. Petersburg hosted the book launch of ‘The Paleev Collection – Ilya and Vladimir Paleev, collector and custodian’ by the Dutch specialist of Russian Modernist Art, Sjeng Scheijen. The first copy was presented to Vladimir Paleev that afternoon in presence of the author Sjeng Scheijen.

About the Paleev Collection

It is the first book to describe in full the history and scope of the famous art works collected by the Paleev family. In the 1960’s a small group of art enthusiasts in the Soviet Union started to collect modernist artworks that were considered formalist or anti-revolutionary, and were therefore ignored by official art institutions. By doing so, these collectors played a pivotal role in the preservation of a crucial and now globally celebrated period of Russian cultural history.

The Paleev collection is the last of these private art collections to remain intact and in the hands of the family. It includes extremely important artworks by Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, Boris Grigoriev, Robert Falk, Nathan Altman and Vladimir Lebedev, among many others.

About the book

This book is the first publication dedicated exclusively to the Paleev collection. It tells the history of the establishment of the collection, and places it in the more general history of private art collecting in the Soviet-Union. It also catalogues its most important art works. The book is published in English/ Russian by Pegasus publishers, Amsterdam.
